A BRIEF PERSONAL RECORD

Frank Kuo is a pioneer on the Internet with over 35 years of experience in networking. After receiving his Ph.D in electrical engineering from the University of Illinois, Dr. Kuo spent his early working years at the university of Hawaii where he served as Director of the ALOHA System Project, one of the earliest radio-linked computer networks and the origin of the basic technologies of local area networks and the ethernet. Later, at SRI International, Dr.Kuo managed a major project that led to the early designs of the NSFNet.

Frank also served as Director of SRI's Arpanet Network Information Center which was the central information resource of the Arpanet and subsequently the Internet.

Frank Kuo has authored some of the most widely used texts in the field of networking and communications. His first book, Network Analysis and Synthesis, J. Wiley & Bons, NY, 1962 [2nd ed. 1966] went through 27 printings in its 25 year lifetime and was heralded as one of the fundamental texts in the field. Frank has also co-authored several other books considered pioneering efforts in their field: System Analysis by Digital Computer, J. Wiley & sons, NY, 1966 and Computer Communications Networks, Prentice Hall, Englewood Cliffs, NJ, 1973; a widely used reference work in computer networks. In addition, Dr. Kuo has co-edited three other books including Protocols and Techniques for Date Communications Networks, Prentice-Hall Publishers, Englewood Cliffs, NJ, 1981. His most recent work: Multimedia Communications: Network Protocols and Applications, is due out this summer.

Dr. Kuo received the Alexander von Humboldt Foundation Research Award in 1994 which resulted in his posting at the University of Mannheim as a visiting Professor of Informatik [1995]. He is also a fellow of the IEEE and is listed in Who'Who in America, American Men and Women of Science, Outstanding Educators of America, and Who's Who in Engineering. He received the Distinguished Alumnus Award from the University of Illinois Alumni Association in 1987 and is a member of the President's Council of the University of Illinois Foundation.
