Nihon University is of incomparable size for a Japanese university, whose forerunner, Nihon Law School was founded by Count Akiyoshi Yamada, the first Minister of Justice of the Meiji Government in 1889, the 22nd year of Meiji.

   As a university celebrating the 120th anniversary of the foundation, Nihon University aims to contribute to world peace and the welfare of humanity by relying on the Japanese spirit, valuing Japanese tradition based on its history and culture, abiding by the constitution, cultivating the spirit of independent creativity, and by working for the development of culture.
The mission of Nihon University is to develop cultured people who are of sound mind and body and conduct in-depth academic research by gathering a broad range of knowledge from around the world.

   Nihon University has 14 colleges 83 departments including College of Law, Humanities and Sciences, Economics, Commerce, Art, International Relations, Science and Technology, Industrial Technology, Engineering, School of Medicine, Dentistry, Dentistry at Matsudo, College of Bioresource Sciences, and Pharmacy. Graduate Schools consist of 20 schools as Graduate School of Law, Literature and Social Sciences, Integrated Basic Sciences, Economics, Business Administration, Art, International Relations, Science and Technology, Industrial Technology, Engineering, Medicine, Dentistry, Dentistry at Matsudo, Bioresource Sciences, Veterinary Medicine, Pharmacy, Advanced Research Institute for the Sciences and Humanities, Business, Social and Cultural Studies and Law School. Junior College is composed of 6 departments and 1 advanced course. In addition, Nihon University also possesses 1 correspondence division, 4 special training schools, and 24 attached and affiliated high schools, 1 kindergarten and 32 Research Institutes. As of May 1, 2008, there are 81,100 graduate and undergraduate students, 17, 583 students and pupils of attached and affiliated schools including a kindergarten and over 7,780 faculty and administrative staff.

   Nihon University, thus, made up of characteristic departments, colleges and schools, has turned out a lot of competent graduates able to comply with the requests of the society by exerting its universality as one of the scale advantages and also by providing education deepened by effective and efficient collaborations among colleges, departments and schools. Above all, the research achievements and outcomes of our university have widely and profoundly contributed to the progress in the academic standard and the advancement of science and technology. Furthermore, in the fields of fine arts and sports, our faculty and graduates have greatly impressed and excited many people and their activities have been highly evaluated and influencing society.

   These achievements and outcomes have stimulated our students’ intellectual curiosity, directed their interest to classes, which make our campus more lively and enhance academic atmosphere.

   Nihon University, with such ideal environment for education and researches, as one of the appealing genuine universities, has been continuously working on fostering those who bear the future of the world as well as of Japan and nurturing those who have ability to communicate flexibly and strong sense of ethics in this dramatically changing social situation today.

   I was inaugurated as the 12th President of Nihon University in September, 2008. As a university of unparalleled caliber supported by its history, tradition and achievements, we will dedicate ourselves to offering high-quality education continuously for further development of society.
