The real meaning of "science" is the intellectual pursuit of synthesis of various academic fields including the humanities, social sciences and natural sciences. In Japan, however, as in Western countries, the study of science has been pursued under subjects separated into isolated entities since the early Meiji era. Moreover, as Japan's academic system remains partitioned by its vertical structure, its graduate-level education and research lags behind that of top graduate schools in the West. To rectify the current situation in Japan, it is necessary to create a foundation for study based on true competitive principles. And to meet such needs, we have harnessed the unsurpassed integrated strength of Nihon University's wide-ranging academic expertise to establish ARISH.
ARISH is comprised of 14 core research institutes, which have been established under a project by the Ministry of Education, Culture, Sports, Science and Technology (MEXT) to enhance university education and research. These institutes represent the collective intellectual power of all Nihon University's existing graduate schools and colleges, and they aim through academic exchange to collaborate with organizations worldwide.
The core programs at ARISH are Human Development Science, Environmental Science and Life Science. Through in-depth study of Humanities and Social Sciences, Science and Technology, and Life Science, students will not only become proficient in each field, but will embark on creating new academic areas through high-level subject integration, and will develop flexible and wide-ranging global perspectives enabling them to become world-leading scholars capable of adapting to various fields and ongoing change.
Nihon University has reconsidered the role of the university as a facility for study and research in this era of global competition, and with the integrated strength of Nihon University as a focal point we have proceeded with pursuing appropriate growth. The establishment of ARISH could be said to mark the culmination of these efforts. While embodying the comprehensive strength of Nihon University, this institute facilitates world-class graduate-level education and research beyond the area of the existing learning framework.
