2025/05/23
On May 1, 2025, the Nihon University Newcastle Campus held its first-ever Heritage Open Day, opening the former Newcastle Courthouse to the public. The event was attended by 40 participants (20 in the morning and 20 in the afternoon) who had made prior reservations. On the day of the event, participants toured the inside of the Building, including the Grand Courtroom, the Small Courtroom, and the Cells, guided by experts in cultural heritage and architecture. Additionally, in the Grand Courtroom, a former barrister who had once presided over a trial at the court appeared wearing the traditional dress of the era and shared anecdotes from that time. This event not only breathed new life into the cultural heritage building but also served as an opportunity to foster new hopes for future collaboration between Japanese and Australian students studying law, legal and related fields, as well as the Newcastle City regional community.
Acknowledgements
Special thanks to all the guides, volunteers, coordinators and stakeholders involved, as well as the University of Newcastle and Wolvi Road in Australia for making this event possible.
